How do I convert AAC to MP3?

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) was standardised in 1997 as MP3's designed successor within MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, and it does deliver better quality at the same bitrate — especially below 128 kbps. Raw .aac files are ADTS streams; more often AAC lives inside M4A or MP4 containers. Despite AAC's technical edge, MP3 still wins on compatibility: some car stereos, hardware players, broadcast systems, and audio tools accept only MP3.

Converting AAC to MP3 is a lossy-to-lossy transcode, so the rule is simple: encode the MP3 at a bitrate equal to or higher than the AAC source. A 128 kbps AAC re-encoded to 128 kbps MP3 will sound slightly worse than either format at 128 kbps from a clean source, because artefacts stack; at 192–320 kbps output the stacking becomes inaudible.

The decoder handles AAC-LC (the common profile) and HE-AAC (used at low bitrates, e.g. internet radio streams). HE-AAC sources are often 48–64 kbps and already fairly degraded — an MP3 at 128 kbps will capture everything that is there without wasting space.

Reasons to convert AAC to MP3 usually come down to compatibility, file-size, or specific feature requirements. Common situations:

• An app or platform only accepts MP3 uploads.
• You need a feature unique to MP3 (e.g. lossless editing, chapter markers, smaller streaming size, etc.) that AAC doesn't provide.
