Supported Formats
mp3.now converts more than 50 audio and video formats to MP3 - and turns MP3 back into every popular audio target, from lossless studio files to phone ringtones.
Lossy Audio Formats
Lossy codecs shrink audio by discarding detail the ear is least likely to miss. They power almost all music streaming, podcasts, and voice recordings - mp3.now converts every one of them to or from MP3.
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
The most universally supported audio format ever made - every player, phone, car stereo, and browser can handle it. Bitrates from 32 to 320 kbps trade file size against quality, with 192-320 kbps sounding transparent to most listeners. MP3 is the hub of every tool on this site.
MPEG-4 Audio
AAC audio wrapped in an MP4 container - the default download format of iTunes and Apple Music, and the output of most iPhone voice memos. Converting M4A to MP3 makes those files playable on every non-Apple device.
Advanced Audio Coding
The designated successor to MP3, delivering noticeably better quality at the same bitrate. AAC is the standard codec for YouTube, Apple devices, and digital broadcasting, usually appearing as a standalone .aac stream or inside M4A/MP4 containers.
Ogg Vorbis Audio
A fully open, royalty-free lossy codec that rivals AAC in quality. Widely used in game engines, open-source software, and by Spotify for streaming. Converting to MP3 helps when a device or editor lacks Vorbis support.
Ogg Audio
The audio-only extension of the Ogg container, usually holding Vorbis, FLAC, or Speex streams. Browsers and Linux tools produce .oga files when recording or exporting audio. mp3.now decodes whichever codec is inside and outputs standard MP3.
Windows Media Audio
Microsoft's codec from the Windows Media Player era, common in music libraries ripped on older PCs. Support outside Windows is patchy, so converting WMA to MP3 is the easiest way to make old collections portable again.
Opus Interactive Audio Codec
The modern IETF standard that outperforms every older lossy codec, especially at low bitrates. WhatsApp voice notes, Discord, and WebRTC calls all use Opus. Convert to MP3 when a player or editing app can't open .opus files.
Adaptive Multi-Rate Audio
A speech codec optimised for mobile networks, used by older Android voice recorders and call-recording apps. AMR keeps voice files tiny but few desktop players open it - converting to MP3 makes recordings shareable anywhere.
Dolby Digital Audio
Dolby's surround-sound codec found on DVDs, Blu-rays, and broadcast TV, supporting up to 5.1 channels. mp3.now downmixes AC3 surround tracks to stereo MP3 so they play on ordinary headphones and speakers.
MPEG-4 Audiobook
Apple's audiobook variant of M4A that adds chapter markers and remembers your playback position. Converting M4B to MP3 lets audiobooks play on car stereos, MP3 players, and apps that don't understand the bookmark format.
MPEG-1 Audio Layer II
The direct predecessor of MP3, still alive in DAB digital radio and professional broadcast archives. It compresses less efficiently than MP3, so converting typically shrinks the file while keeping comparable quality.
RealAudio
RealNetworks' pioneering streaming format from the dial-up era of the 1990s web. Modern players have long since dropped support, so converting old .ra files to MP3 is often the only way to hear them again.
Synthetic Music Mobile Application Format
Yamaha's SMAF format, used for polyphonic ringtones on feature phones in the early 2000s. Files can mix synthesized instruments with sampled audio. mp3.now renders MMF content to a normal MP3 you can play anywhere.
GSM 06.10 Audio
The full-rate speech codec of 2G mobile telephony, still produced by voicemail systems, PBX servers, and call-logging software. It stores 8 kHz mono voice at very low bitrates; conversion to MP3 makes the recordings playable everywhere.
Speex Audio
An open speech codec designed for VoIP and podcasting before Opus replaced it. Older recording tools and some game voice chats still emit .spx files. mp3.now decodes Speex and outputs a standard MP3.
Matroska Audio
The audio-only sibling of MKV that can wrap nearly any codec - AAC, Vorbis, FLAC, Opus, and more - plus chapters and multiple tracks. Converting MKA to MP3 flattens it into a single file every player understands.
Lossless & Uncompressed Audio Formats
Lossless formats preserve every bit of the original recording - ideal for studios and archiving, but heavy for everyday listening. Converting them to MP3 cuts file size by 80-90% while keeping excellent perceived quality.
Waveform Audio File Format
Uncompressed PCM audio - the universal working format of recording studios, DAWs, and sound design. A CD-quality WAV weighs about 10 MB per minute, so converting to MP3 makes tracks small enough to email, stream, or store in bulk.
Free Lossless Audio Codec
The most popular open lossless codec, shrinking audio to roughly half its WAV size with zero quality loss. Favoured by audiophiles and hi-res music stores. Convert FLAC to MP3 for car stereos and devices with limited storage.
Audio Interchange File Format
Apple's uncompressed PCM format, the macOS counterpart to WAV. Standard in Logic Pro, GarageBand, and professional mastering on Mac. File sizes match WAV, so MP3 conversion brings the same 90% space savings.
Apple Lossless Audio Codec
Apple's answer to FLAC, stored in .m4a containers and used by Apple Music's lossless tier. Compression is similar to FLAC. Convert ALAC to MP3 when you need small files that play outside the Apple ecosystem.
Monkey's Audio
A lossless codec known for squeezing files smaller than FLAC at the cost of heavier decoding. Popular in CD-archiving communities, often paired with .cue sheets. Player support is limited, which makes MP3 conversion the practical route for listening.
WavPack Audio
An open lossless codec with a unique hybrid mode that splits audio into a small lossy file plus a correction file. Respected in archiving circles but rarely supported on portable devices - convert to MP3 for playback anywhere.
Core Audio Format
Apple's professional audio container, built to hold any codec without WAV's 4 GB size limit. Used by Logic Pro, GarageBand loops, and iOS system sounds. mp3.now reads the enclosed audio and converts it straight to MP3.
Sun/NeXT Audio
The classic Unix audio format from Sun Microsystems and NeXT, typically holding PCM or µ-law voice data. Still encountered in Java applications, legacy systems, and old sound archives. Converts cleanly to MP3.
DSD Stream File
Direct Stream Digital audio as used on Super Audio CDs - a 1-bit stream sampled at 2.8 MHz or higher. Files are enormous and need specialised DACs to play natively. mp3.now converts DSF to MP3 for everyday devices.
True Audio Lossless
A free lossless codec designed for fast, real-time encoding, popular in Eastern European and Japanese CD-archiving scenes. Hardware support is nearly nonexistent, so MP3 conversion is the standard way to take TTA rips on the go.
Creative Voice File
The native recording format of Creative Labs Sound Blaster cards from the DOS era. Found in retro games and 1990s software archives. mp3.now decodes VOC blocks and outputs a modern MP3 file.
Video Formats (Extract Audio)
Upload any video and mp3.now pulls out its soundtrack as a clean MP3 - perfect for turning lectures, concerts, interviews, or screen recordings into audio you can listen to anywhere. The video track is discarded; only the audio is kept.
MPEG-4 Video
The dominant video container on the modern web, phones, and social platforms, usually carrying an AAC soundtrack. Extracting MP3 from MP4 is the classic way to save the audio of a downloaded clip or recording.
iTunes Video
Apple's flavour of MP4 used by iTunes and the TV app, sometimes with FairPlay DRM on purchased content. DRM-free M4V files convert to MP3 exactly like regular MP4s.
QuickTime Movie
Apple's QuickTime container - the default recording format of iPhones and macOS screen capture. Extract the soundtrack to MP3 to keep just the voice or music from a clip.
Matroska Video
An open container that can hold any codec plus multiple audio tracks and subtitles - common for high-quality rips and archives. mp3.now extracts the default audio track and encodes it to MP3.
Audio Video Interleave
Microsoft's veteran container from 1992, still common for older recordings, camcorder footage, and DivX/Xvid files. The audio track - often MP3 or AC3 already - is extracted and re-encoded cleanly.
WebM Video
Google's royalty-free web container carrying VP8/VP9/AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. Browser screen recorders and many download tools output WebM; conversion turns the audio into universal MP3.
Flash Video
The format of the Flash-player web era - early YouTube and countless archived clips. Flash is gone, but FLV files remain; mp3.now recovers their audio as MP3.
Windows Media Video
Microsoft's video counterpart to WMA, common in older Windows recordings and PowerPoint exports. The WMA soundtrack inside is decoded and converted to standard MP3.
3GPP Multimedia
The recording format of pre-smartphone mobile phones on GSM networks, holding AMR or AAC audio. Convert old phone videos to MP3 to preserve voice clips and memories in a playable format.
3GPP2 Multimedia
The CDMA-network sibling of 3GP, produced by phones on Verizon/Sprint-style networks in the 2000s. Structurally near-identical to 3GP and converts to MP3 the same way.
MPEG Video
MPEG-1/MPEG-2 program streams - the standard behind Video CDs and DVDs. The MP2 or AC3 audio inside converts directly to MP3 with no quality surprises.
MPEG Video
The three-letter extension for the same MPEG-1/2 streams, used by older capture cards and DVD-authoring tools. mp3.now treats MPG and MPEG identically when extracting audio.
MPEG Transport Stream
The broadcast-grade stream format used by digital TV, IPTV, and HLS segment downloads. Designed to survive transmission errors; its audio track extracts cleanly to MP3.
AVCHD Video
The recording format of Sony and Panasonic HD camcorders, storing H.264 video with AC3 or PCM sound. Extract concert or event audio from camcorder footage as MP3.
Blu-ray BDAV Video
The transport-stream container used on Blu-ray discs and AVCHD media, often carrying lossless or surround audio. mp3.now downmixes and converts the soundtrack to stereo MP3.
DVD Video Object
The container found in a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder, bundling MPEG-2 video with AC3 or DTS audio. Convert VOB to MP3 to rip music performances or dialogue from unencrypted DVDs.
Ogg Video
The video extension of the open Ogg container, typically Theora video with Vorbis audio. Used by Wikipedia and open-content archives; its audio converts straight to MP3.
Advanced Systems Format
Microsoft's streaming container that underlies both WMA and WMV files. Older Windows Media streams and downloads use the .asf extension directly; the audio extracts to MP3 without fuss.
RealMedia Video
RealNetworks' streaming video format from the late 1990s, pairing RealVideo with RealAudio. Modern software rarely opens it, so MP3 extraction is the practical way to rescue the audio.
RealMedia Variable Bitrate
The variable-bitrate successor to RM, once hugely popular for Asian TV and film distribution. mp3.now decodes the RealAudio track and delivers it as a standard MP3.
DivX Video
The MPEG-4 codec brand that defined 2000s video sharing, usually packaged in AVI containers with MP3 or AC3 sound. Audio extraction gives you a clean MP3 without re-encoding artifacts.
Flash MP4 Video
Adobe's MP4-based replacement for FLV, used by later Flash players with H.264 video and AAC audio. Structurally an MP4, so its soundtrack converts to MP3 flawlessly.
Digital Video
The tape-based format of MiniDV camcorders from the 1990s and 2000s, storing uncompressed PCM audio alongside DV video. Extract that audio as MP3 when digitising old family tapes.
Material Exchange Format
The professional broadcast container used by TV stations and cinema workflows, typically with uncompressed multichannel PCM audio. mp3.now extracts and downmixes it to a portable stereo MP3.
MP3 Output Targets
mp3.now also works in reverse: turn any MP3 into the format a specific app, device, or workflow requires. Note that converting a lossy MP3 to a lossless format cannot restore detail that was already discarded.
Waveform Audio File Format
Decode MP3 to uncompressed PCM for editing in a DAW, burning to CD, or feeding software that only accepts WAV. The output is bit-exact PCM of the decoded MP3 stream.
MPEG-4 Audio
Re-encode MP3 as AAC in an M4A container for Apple Music libraries, iMovie projects, and iOS apps that prefer the format. Choose your bitrate at conversion time.
Advanced Audio Coding
Produce a standalone AAC stream from your MP3 for streaming pipelines and embedded players. AAC keeps quality high at moderate bitrates.
Ogg Vorbis Audio
Convert MP3 to the open Vorbis codec for game engines, open-source projects, and platforms that require royalty-free audio assets.
Free Lossless Audio Codec
Wrap your MP3's decoded audio in FLAC for archives or tools that demand lossless input. No further quality is lost in the process.
Windows Media Audio
Generate WMA files for legacy Windows software, older car head units, and devices from the Windows Media Player era.
Audio Interchange File Format
Export uncompressed AIFF for Logic Pro, GarageBand, and Mac mastering workflows that expect Apple's PCM format.

Encode MP2 for DAB radio playout systems and broadcast archives that still standardise on Layer II audio.
WavPack Audio
Convert MP3 to WavPack for archival collections and tools built around the WavPack toolchain.
MP3 Utilities
Beyond format conversion, mp3.now includes free tools for editing and optimising MP3 files directly in your browser - no software to install.
Compress MP3
Shrink an MP3 by lowering its bitrate or targeting an exact file size in kilobytes. Ideal for email attachments, upload limits, and freeing up storage while keeping listenable quality.
Trim MP3
Cut an MP3 to an exact start and end point - perfect for making ringtones, isolating a chorus, or removing silence from a recording. The audio is cut without re-encoding losses beyond the trim.
Merge MP3
Join multiple MP3 files into one continuous track in the order you choose. Useful for stitching podcast segments, audiobook chapters, or DJ sets into a single file.
Normalize MP3
Even out the loudness of an MP3 using EBU R128 loudness normalization, so quiet recordings become audible and loud ones stop clipping. Great for podcast episodes and mixed-source playlists.
MP3 Bitrate Changer
Re-encode an MP3 at any bitrate from 32 to 320 kbps. Drop to 128 kbps for small voice files, or standardise a library to a single bitrate for consistent playback devices.
MP3 Speed Changer
Speed up or slow down an MP3 without changing its pitch. Listen to lectures and audiobooks at 1.5x, or slow a music passage down to practise along with it.
Stereo to Mono
Downmix a stereo MP3 to a single mono channel. Mono halves the data needed at a given quality - the standard choice for voice recordings, telephony prompts, and podcasts.
