About MP3 compression
Compressing an MP3 means re-encoding it at a lower bitrate. Bitrate is the amount of data spent per second of audio, so it maps directly to file size: a 320 kbps file re-encoded at 128 kbps shrinks to 40% of its size; at 64 kbps, to 20%. The catch is that MP3 compression is lossy — each re-encode discards more information, so this is a deliberate size/quality trade, explained in depth in our MP3 compression guide.
How low you can go depends on the content. Music starts to audibly suffer below 128 kbps — cymbals smear, stereo width collapses, transients dull. Speech is far more forgiving: podcasts and voice memos stay perfectly intelligible at 64–96 kbps, especially in mono. This is why podcast bitrate guidance differs so much from music guidance.
Two free wins compound the savings. Switching stereo to mono for single-voice recordings halves the data needed at any given quality. And lowering the sample rate to 22.05 kHz for speech-only content shaves more size with minimal audible cost (do not do this for music). Combined — 64 kbps, mono — an hour-long voice recording drops to about 28 MB.
Never compress a compressed file twice if you can avoid it: each generation stacks artefacts. Compress once, from the best source you have, directly to the target bitrate. And note the obvious asymmetry — re-encoding a 128 kbps file at 320 kbps makes it larger without making it better.
Where MP3 comes from
The bitrate ladder MP3 users argue about today was baked into the MPEG-1 standard in 1993: Layer III defined fixed rates from 32 to 320 kbps. In the dial-up era 128 kbps became "CD quality" in marketing shorthand largely because it made a song fit a reasonable download, not because it was transparent. As bandwidth grew, 192 and then 320 kbps became the norms for music, while the low end of the ladder found its lasting niche in speech — podcasting settled on 64–128 kbps as its standard range.
Real-world workflow — Shrinking a lecture recording for email
- Upload the original MP3 (e.g. 60 minutes at 256 kbps ≈ 115 MB).
- Select 64 kbps and mono output — speech needs no more.
- Convert; the file drops to roughly 28 MB.

When to compress MP3
Compressing MP3 files is one of the most common audio tasks on the web. Podcasters, journalists, and voice-over artists deal with large audio files constantly. Podcast hosts meter storage by the megabyte. Gmail rejects attachments over 25 MB. LMS and voicemail platforms cap uploads. Compressing before upload is the standard solution for all of these situations.
