What Is Audio Bitrate? A Practical Guide

Bitrate is the amount of data an audio file spends describing each second of sound, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). It is the single biggest factor in both the quality and the size of a lossy file like an MP3. Grasp bitrate and most other audio settings fall into place around it.

The Size Math

The relationship is linear and easy to estimate: file size = bitrate x duration. A 4-minute track at 320 kbps is 320,000 bits x 240 seconds = ~9.6 MB. The same track at 128 kbps is ~3.8 MB. This is why a whole audiobook can be smaller than one high-bitrate song - speech is encoded at far lower bitrates. Doubling bitrate always doubles size, but it does not double perceived quality; returns diminish sharply past ~192 kbps for MP3.

Bitrate vs Quality: Not the Same Thing

Bitrate caps quality; it does not guarantee it. A file re-encoded up to 320 kbps from a 96 kbps source still sounds like 96 kbps - lost data never returns. Codec efficiency also matters: 128 kbps AAC or Opus outperforms 128 kbps MP3. And lossless formats like FLAC have bitrates too (~700-1,100 kbps), but there the number reflects compression efficiency, not quality choices.
