Normalization adjusts a recording's overall level so it plays at a consistent, predictable loudness. The modern approach is loudness normalization measured in LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale), which models perceived loudness rather than raw signal peaks — the same EBU R128 methodology streaming platforms use, applied via an analysis pass and gain adjustment (ffmpeg's loudnorm filter is the reference implementation of this approach).

This differs from simple peak normalization, which raises the level until the single loudest sample hits a ceiling. Peak normalization can leave a quiet-but-peaky recording still sounding quiet; loudness normalization targets how loud the material actually sounds, which is why it fixes the classic problems — a library where every album plays at a different volume, or a podcast where the host is loud and the guest is a whisper.

Targets worth knowing: streaming music services normalize to around -14 LUFS, podcasts standardise on -16 LUFS (stereo) to -19 LUFS (mono), and broadcast uses -23 LUFS (EBU R128). Normalizing your files to the target of their destination means listeners never reach for the volume knob, and platform-side automatic adjustment leaves your audio untouched.

Note that normalization changes overall gain, not dynamics: the loud and quiet parts keep their relationship. If one speaker is much quieter than another within the same file, full dynamics processing (compression in an editor) is the proper fix; normalization gets the file's average level right.

Loudness normalization grew out of the broadcast "loudness wars" of the 2000s: peak-based limits let heavily compressed adverts sound far louder than programmes at identical peak levels. The EBU R128 recommendation (2010) replaced peak metering with perceived-loudness measurement in LUFS, and the approach spread from broadcast to streaming — Spotify, YouTube, and Apple all now auto-adjust tracks to their loudness targets. Normalizing your own files simply applies the same science before upload.
