How do I convert M4A to MP3?

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that almost always holds AAC (lossy) audio, or occasionally ALAC (Apple Lossless). It is the default format for iTunes purchases, Apple Music downloads, and Voice Memos on iPhone. While Apple devices play M4A natively, plenty of car stereos, older MP3 players, DJ software, and embedded systems do not — converting to MP3 buys near-universal compatibility.

If your M4A contains AAC, this is a lossy-to-lossy transcode: the AAC is decoded and re-encoded with LAME. Choose a bitrate at or above the source (a 256 kbps AAC file should become a 256–320 kbps MP3) to keep generational loss inaudible. If your M4A contains ALAC, you are converting from a lossless source and a 320 kbps MP3 will be effectively transparent.

Quality-wise, AAC is a slightly more efficient codec than MP3 at the same bitrate — it was designed as MP3's successor — so don't convert for quality reasons; convert for compatibility. The difference at 256 kbps and above is inaudible to nearly everyone; the practical win is that the resulting MP3 plays literally everywhere. Reasons to convert M4A to MP3 usually come down to compatibility, file-size, or specific feature requirements. Common situations:

• An app or platform only accepts MP3 uploads.
• You need a feature unique to MP3 (e.g. lossless editing, chapter markers, smaller streaming size, etc.) that M4A doesn't provide.
• You're optimising file size — modern formats often produce smaller files than the older format you started with.
• You need a single archival format across a project so files behave consistently in the same viewer.
