A Codec Built for Cinema
AC3 is a lossy perceptual codec, like MP3 in principle, but designed around multichannel film sound. Its signature layout is 5.1: front left/centre/right, two surrounds, and a low-frequency effects (LFE) channel for the subwoofer. It also carries useful playback metadata- Dialogue normalization (dialnorm) to keep dialogue levels consistent and dynamic range compression flags for late-night listening. Each channel is compressed with a perceptual model while bits are shared across channels, fitting six channels of cinema sound into less space than one uncompressed channel would need.
Technical Characteristics
AC3 supports bitrates from 32 to 640 kbps- DVDs typically use 384 or 448 kbps for 5.1, and 192 kbps for stereo- At sample rates of 32, 44.1, or 48 kHz. It appears as a raw .ac3 stream or muxed inside video containers (VOB, MKV, MP4, TS). Its successor E-AC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) extends the family to 7.1 channels and streaming services, and is the basis for carrying Dolby Atmos on many platforms.
AC3 for Music Listening?
AC3 was never meant as a music distribution format, and phones, portable players, and many desktop apps will not open a bare .ac3 file- Licensing historically kept decoders out of consumer software. For listening on ordinary devices, the practical move is converting to a standard stereo format. Note that a 5.1 source is downmixed to stereo in the process- Expected and correct for headphone or speaker playback.
Compatibility
In the home-theatre world AC3 decoding is universal- AV receivers, soundbars, TVs, and Blu-ray players all license it. On computers, VLC and other ffmpeg-based players open .ac3 files easily, but stock phone players, web browsers, and portable devices generally do not, and audio editors are similarly split. That is why a stereo MP3 or WAV copy is the practical working format for anything beyond home-cinema playback.
