Maximum Compression, Maximum Cost
Monkey's Audio is a symmetric codec: the harder it compresses, the harder your player must work to decompress- Unlike FLAC, which decodes quickly at every level. Compression presets run from Fast through Normal, High, Extra High, to Insane. At the strong settings APE beats FLAC by roughly 2-5% in size, at the cost of noticeably higher CPU use- A real issue for battery-powered players. Encoding is similarly slow at the strong presets; that mattered more when the format launched and CPUs were weaker, but the decode burden on portable hardware remains the practical constraint today.
Technical Characteristics
APE is fully lossless, supporting 8, 16, and 24-bit audio at standard sample rates, with APEv2 tags for metadata. Two structural weaknesses matter for archiving: large frame sizes mean a small corruption can damage a comparatively long stretch of audio (FLAC's smaller, checksummed frames contain errors better), and seeking within highly compressed files is slower. Many APE collections store a whole CD as one file plus a .cue sheet marking track boundaries.
Compatibility
This is APE's weakest point. Support is decent on Windows via foobar2000 and similar players, but macOS, iOS, and Android need third-party apps, and hardware support in car stereos, DAPs, and smart speakers is close to nonexistent. FLAC and ALAC deliver the same lossless quality with vastly broader reach, which is why most archivists have migrated.
APE and CUE Sheets
Many APE collections are single-file album images paired with a .cue sheet- A small text file listing where each track starts. Players such as foobar2000 read the pair together and present individual tracks; without the cue sheet the album still plays, just as one long track. The cue sheet is plain text, so keep it next to the .ape file when copying or backing up an album- Its timestamps are also exactly what you need when splitting a converted album into tracks later.

If you want to stay lossless while gaining compatibility, converting to FLAC preserves every bit and roughly matches the original file size.
