Rescuing Audio from Old Camcorder Files: AVI, MPG, and VOB

Somewhere in a drawer or on an aging external drive, most families have them: AVI files ripped from MiniDV tapes in 2004, VOB files pulled off DVD-camcorder discs, MPG files from an early digital camcorder that recorded straight to a memory card. The video is often blurry, interlaced, and painful to watch by modern standards. But the audio — a grandparent telling a story, a toddler's first sentences, a wedding toast from someone no longer here — is irreplaceable, and it plays back just as clearly today as the day it was recorded.

The problem is that almost nothing modern opens these files willingly. This guide explains what is actually inside them, why they have become so hard to play, and the conversion path that rescues the soundtrack into MP3 before drive failure or format rot takes it for good.

What these old formats actually are

AVI: the 1990s workhorse

AVI is a Microsoft container from 1992. Camcorder capture software of the early 2000s wrote AVI files with a grab-bag of codecs inside — DV audio, uncompressed PCM, early MP3, sometimes obscure proprietary codecs from the capture-card vendor. Modern players often recognize the container but lack the codec, which is why an AVI might open and show video with no sound, or vice versa. An AVI to MP3 converter that ships its own decoders sidesteps the missing-codec problem entirely: it reads whatever audio stream is present and writes a standard MP3.

MPG: early digital camcorders and TV capture

MPG files hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MP2 (MPEG-1 Layer II) audio — the broadcast-TV codec, not quite MP3. MP2 audio has actually aged fine and usually sounds decent, but player support has quietly evaporated. A pass through an MPG to MP3 converter re-encodes the MP2 stream into MP3 that plays literally everywhere.

VOB: DVD camcorders and home-burned discs

VOB is the format DVD players read — MPEG-2 video with AC-3 or MP2 audio, chopped into 1 GB segments on the disc. If you copied a home-burned DVD's VIDEO_TS folder to a hard drive, you have a pile of VTS_01_1.VOB style files. Each one converts independently through a VOB to MP3 converter; if a single event spans several VOB segments, convert each and then merge the MP3s back into one continuous recording.

Why you should do this soon

  • Media decay is real. Burned DVDs use organic dye that degrades; discs from the mid-2000s are now at the age where read errors appear. Hard drives from that era are well past their expected life.
  • Software support is shrinking, not growing. Every OS release drops another legacy codec. Files that opened in 2015 already fail on some 2026 systems.
  • Audio is the cheap rescue. Properly restoring old video is a project. Extracting the audio is a five-minute job per file, and for most family material the voices are the part that matters.

The rescue workflow

Work drive by drive, oldest media first:

  • Copy before converting. Get every file off optical discs and aging drives onto current storage first. Discs get one gentle read; do not run repeated conversion attempts against failing media.
  • Convert by container. AVI files through the AVI converter, MPG through the MPG converter, VOB through the VOB converter. If you are unsure what a file is, the extension is usually honest for this era of file. The FAQ on supported formats lists everything the converters accept.
  • Pick a generous bitrate. These are one-shot rescues, so do not squeeze them: 192 kbps is a sensible floor, 256 kbps if the source had music. Camcorder microphones were not hi-fi, but the encode should never be the weakest link.
  • Normalize afterward. Camcorder auto-gain produced wildly uneven levels — a birthday party that whispers, then blasts. A normalization pass makes the collection listenable end to end; the loudness FAQ explains what normalization actually changes.
  • Trim the dead tape. MiniDV rips often start with thirty seconds of static or lens-cap black. A quick trim tidies each file.

When a file refuses to convert

A small percentage of legacy files will fail on the first attempt, and the cause is usually one of three things. Partial copies — a VOB that stopped copying at 700 MB of its 1 GB — often still convert up to the truncation point, which rescues most of the audio. Renamed extensions are common in this era: a file called .avi that is actually an MPG (or vice versa) because someone renamed it in 2006 to make a player accept it; simply try the other converter. And genuinely corrupt sectors from decaying discs sometimes yield a file where the first few minutes convert and the rest is noise — in that case, take what plays, because a second read of the disc occasionally recovers more. Persistence pays with legacy media; total losses are rarer than first attempts suggest.

Should you keep a lossless copy?

For most camcorder material, MP3 at 192 kbps or above captures everything the original microphone captured — these devices recorded compressed, band-limited audio to begin with. But for the truly irreplaceable items, like the last recording of a relative's voice, it costs little to also keep the original video file untouched as the archival master, alongside the MP3 as the everyday listening copy. After the rescue

Once the audio exists as MP3, it stops being fragile. It plays on every phone, uploads to every cloud service, attaches to email, and copies to every relative who wants it. Name the files with dates and events while memory serves — "2003-07 lake house, grandpa fishing story.mp3" will mean something in twenty years; "VTS_01_2.mp3" will not. If a file runs long, keep the full version and cut a highlights version of the best moments.

The entire project — a box of discs and a dusty drive — typically fits in a weekend. The recordings survived twenty years of format churn to reach you; an afternoon of conversion is what carries them through the next twenty.
