What Lossless Actually Means
Decode a FLAC file and you get back the exact PCM samples that went in - bit-for-bit identical to the source WAV or CD rip. Typical FLAC compression lands at 50-70% of the original size, so a 40 MB WAV becomes roughly a 25 MB FLAC. An MP3 of the same track at 320 kbps would be about 9-10 MB, but the reduction comes from discarding audio data permanently.
Can You Hear the Difference?
In blind tests, most listeners cannot reliably distinguish a well-encoded 256-320 kbps MP3 from FLAC on typical playback gear. The difference matters most with revealing headphones, quiet acoustic material, and trained ears - and it matters enormously for editing: every re-encode of an MP3 compounds loss, while FLAC survives unlimited round trips. That is why FLAC is the archival choice even when the audible gap is small.
Storage and Compatibility Trade-offs
A 1,000-song library needs roughly 25-30 GB as FLAC versus 8-10 GB as 320 kbps MP3. FLAC support is now common on Android, desktop players, and hi-fi streamers, but it is patchy on older devices, and some platforms (notably Apple hardware, which prefers ALAC) need third-party apps. MP3 plays everywhere without question.

The archive-first habit pays off in both directions - if your MP3s are ever lost or you decide 192 kbps was too low, you regenerate them from FLAC in minutes, and when a new device happens to support FLAC natively you simply copy the originals across. The reverse is impossible: an MP3-only library can never become genuinely lossless again. Whatever you do, make the lossy conversion the last step in the chain, never an intermediate one.
