One Extension, Two Very Different Payloads
An M4A file holding AAC is a compact lossy file, typically 128-256 kbps- iTunes Store purchases are 256 kbps AAC. An M4A holding ALAC (Apple Lossless) is a bit-perfect archive several times larger. Both use the same MPEG-4 (ISO base media) container that also underlies .mp4 video, .m4b audiobooks, and .m4r ringtones, and both carry rich metadata including embedded artwork. You can usually spot which you have by size: a 4-minute song around 8 MB is AAC, while 20-40 MB strongly suggests ALAC.
Technical Characteristics
The MPEG-4 container stores audio in a structured tree of "atoms", supporting chapters, artwork, gapless-playback data, and extensive tagging. AAC payloads commonly run 96-320 kbps at 44.1 or 48 kHz; ALAC payloads support up to 32-bit / 384 kHz. Apple's related extensions differ only in purpose: .m4b adds bookmarking for audiobooks, and .m4r marks iPhone ringtones. Because the container is shared with MP4 video, most video tools can read M4A files directly, and gapless-playback data keeps live albums and DJ mixes seamless.
When to Use M4A
M4A/AAC is an excellent everyday music format inside the Apple ecosystem and on any modern phone- Slightly better quality per megabyte than MP3. Voice memos, lecture recordings, and iTunes libraries all live happily as M4A. Compatibility
M4A plays natively on iOS, macOS, Android, and Windows 10 or later. Problems appear with older hardware and software that predates MPEG-4 audio, and with ALAC-in-M4A on non-Apple devices where only the AAC variant is expected. If a player rejects your M4A, converting to MP3 resolves it almost every time. Sharing is the other pain point: some messaging platforms and web upload forms whitelist .mp3 but not .m4a, even when the receiving device could play it perfectly well.
