M4B vs M4A
Both formats share the same container and usually the same AAC audio- The difference is behavioural. An M4A is treated as music: stop playback and you restart from the beginning. An M4B is bookmarkable: supporting players resume exactly where you left off, even after playing other files. M4B files also make full use of embedded chapter markers, letting you jump between chapters of a 12-hour book.
Technical Characteristics
Audiobook M4Bs are typically mono or stereo AAC at modest bitrates- 32-64 kbps mono is common for speech, 64-128 kbps for higher-quality productions- Keeping a full-length book to a few hundred megabytes. The MPEG-4 container carries chapter titles and timestamps, cover art, author/narrator metadata, and can span many hours in a single file. A single file also keeps a long book in order- No misplaced track seven- Which is why one M4B with chapters beats a folder of numbered MP3s for many listeners. Some M4Bs from stores carry DRM; only DRM-free files can be converted.
When to Use M4B
Use M4B when you are building or organising an audiobook library in Apple Books or a dedicated audiobook app- The resume and chapter features genuinely improve long-form listening. If your player does not understand M4B (many car systems and simple MP3 players do not), a chaptered book converted to MP3 still plays fine; you simply lose the bookmarking behaviour.
Compatibility
M4B plays on Apple devices through Apple Books, and on Android and desktop through audiobook apps such as Smart AudioBook Player, BookPlayer, and Audiobookshelf. Generic music players often treat an M4B as ordinary audio- It plays, but without resume or chapters- While many car systems and portable players refuse the extension outright even though they could decode the AAC inside. Renaming .m4b to .m4a sometimes gets such players to accept the file, at the cost of book behaviour.
