The WMA Codec Family
WMA is really four codecs sharing one name: WMA Standard (the common lossy codec, typically 64-192 kbps), WMA Pro (higher resolution and multichannel), WMA Lossless (bit-perfect archiving), and WMA Voice (low-bitrate speech). The audio travels inside Microsoft's ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container, which also enabled the DRM copy protection that many 2000s music-store downloads carried.
Technical Characteristics
WMA Standard supports sample rates up to 48 kHz in stereo at bitrates up to 320 kbps, encoded with an MDCT-based approach broadly similar to MP3 and AAC. Microsoft claimed superior low-bitrate quality versus MP3, and at 64-96 kbps that was often true; at higher bitrates the differences are minor. WMA Pro extends things to 24-bit / 96 kHz and 7.1 channels but saw little adoption outside Windows. WMA Lossless, like FLAC or ALAC, reconstructs audio bit-for-bit- Files in that variant deserve a lossless target when migrating, or a high-bitrate MP3 for casual listening.
Why WMA Faded
WMA's fortunes were tied to Windows Media Player, PlaysForSure DRM, and the Zune- All discontinued. Apple devices never supported it, Android does not play it natively, and Microsoft itself now favours AAC and other standards. DRM-protected WMA files from defunct stores are often permanently locked, since the license servers are gone; only DRM-free WMA can be converted.
Compatibility Today
Windows still plays WMA natively, and VLC opens it on any platform. Beyond that, support is sparse: iPhones, iPads, and most Android phones will not play WMA without a third-party app, web browsers cannot play it at all, and modern car systems increasingly drop it from their supported lists. For sharing or long-term storage, migrating to MP3- Or a lossless format for WMA Lossless sources- Is the sensible path. As a rule of thumb: if you cannot name a device you still own that requires WMA, there is no reason to keep creating or storing files in it.
