GarageBand to Podcast: Exporting the Right MP3 Every Time
GarageBand is a genuinely capable podcast editor that ships free on every Mac — with an export workflow seemingly designed to be found by accident. The settings that matter are hidden behind a menu most users never open, the defaults produce an M4A file when nearly every podcast workflow expects MP3, and the iPhone version cannot export MP3 at all. This guide covers the exact export path on both platforms, the settings to pick, and what to do when a client, host, or collaborator insists on MP3.
Where the export actually lives (Mac)
Nothing in GarageBand's main window says "export." The path is: Share → Export Song to Disc… in the menu bar. ("Share" suggests social posting; it is actually the only way to get a finished file out.) The dialog that opens is the entire export interface:
- Format: AAC, MP3, AIFF, or WAVE. AAC is the default — this is why first-time podcasters end up with M4A files. Choose MP3 for podcast delivery.
- Quality: for MP3, a bitrate menu from 64 kbps up to 320 kbps. For a speech podcast, 128 kbps is the standard pick; the podcast bitrate FAQ explains why higher rates are wasted on voice.
- Export cycle area only: if the yellow cycle region is active, GarageBand exports only that region. More truncated podcast episodes trace back to a forgotten cycle region than to any other cause — glance at the top of the timeline before every export.
The settings checklist before you export
- Turn off the metronome and count-in (they do not export, but confirm the master echo/reverb sends are where you want them).
- Silence-check the start and end of the timeline for stray clips on muted tracks — muted is fine, but soloed tracks elsewhere will change the mix.
- Check the master volume slider: GarageBand's automatic normalize-on-export option (in preferences under Advanced) can interact with it unpredictably. Aim for peaks comfortably below clipping and handle loudness downstream.
- Play the last ten seconds. GarageBand ends the export at the end of the last region, so a reverb tail or music fade can get clipped if the region ends exactly at the final note — extend the region slightly.
The iPhone and iPad problem: no MP3 export
GarageBand for iOS shares a name with the Mac app but not an export dialog. Its share sheet offers the song as an AAC file (an .m4a), Apple Lossless, or an uncompressed AIFF — MP3 is simply not on the menu. If you edit on an iPad and your podcast host, editor, or client wants MP3, the workflow is: export the highest-quality option available (Apple Lossless or uncompressed if offered, otherwise highest-quality AAC), get the file off the device via AirDrop, Files, or iCloud Drive, and convert it with an M4A to MP3 converter. Convert once, from the best source, at your delivery bitrate — do not export a low-quality AAC and then re-encode it to MP3, because stacking two lossy encodes audibly degrades speech.
The AIFF route: keep a real master
For anything beyond a quick episode, export twice. First choose AIFF (or WAVE) to produce a lossless master — this is the file you archive and the file any future re-edit starts from. Then either export again as MP3, or encode the AIFF with an AIFF to MP3 converter at delivery settings. The two-file habit costs one extra minute and means you are never trapped re-encoding an MP3 when a host changes requirements or a clip needs remastering. Sample rate and the project settings you set once
GarageBand runs projects at 44.1 kHz by default, which happens to be exactly what a podcast MP3 should be — so for most users the right move is to leave it alone. The exception is audio recorded elsewhere at 48 kHz (a video shoot, a field recorder set for film work) and imported into your session: GarageBand resamples it silently, which is fine, but if your whole workflow originates at 48 kHz you may prefer to keep the project there and let the final MP3 encode handle the conversion. Either way, make the decision once and stop thinking about it; sample-rate anxiety costs podcasters far more time than sample rates ever cost them in quality.
When the exported file is too big
GarageBand remembers your last quality setting, so a podcast exported after a music project can silently come out at 320 kbps — roughly 144 MB for an hour, where 128 kbps would be 58 MB. If you notice after the fact and do not want to reopen the project, run the file through an MP3 compressor to bring it down to a sane delivery size in one step. The result is a second lossy generation, but from 320 kbps down to 128 kbps on speech the difference is inaudible in practice — a far better outcome than uploading a triple-size file.
A repeatable weekly routine
Once the quirks are known, GarageBand exports become muscle memory:
- Check the cycle region is off (or set exactly to the episode).
- Share → Export Song to Disc.
- Export 1: AIFF, archived to your masters folder.
- Export 2: MP3 at 128 kbps (or convert the AIFF).
- Verify the MP3's duration matches the project, listen to the first and last thirty seconds, tag it, upload it.
GarageBand's export dialog never stops being oddly hidden, and the iOS version never gains an MP3 button — but neither matters once your routine routes around them.
