The clock starts at the moment the conversion completes, not when you first visit the download page. Downloading a file does not reset or extend its window- A guest file converted at 9 a.m. Monday is gone at 9 a.m. Tuesday regardless of how many times it was downloaded in between.
What Exactly Gets Deleted
Everything associated with the conversion: the original file you uploaded, the converted MP3 (or other output format), and any intermediate files created during processing. Deletion is automatic and permanent- There is no recycle bin and no way for support to recover an expired file, which is a deliberate part of our privacy design. If you are logged in, the history entry (filename, format, size, timestamp) remains in your dashboard for reference, but its download link goes dead.
Practical Consequences
The main habit to build: download your file as soon as it converts. A guest link shared with a friend on Monday will not work on Wednesday. If a link has expired, the fix is simply to upload the source and convert again- It costs one conversion from your daily allowance and produces an identical result, since the same settings run through the same pipeline. For batch jobs, download the whole batch before closing the tab, because every file in the batch expires on the same schedule. Treat mp3.now as a converter, not a backup service- The only durable copy of your audio should be the one on your own device or storage.
Extending Your Window
If 24 hours is too tight, a free account extends retention to 7 days at no cost- Usually enough to convert on your laptop and download later on your phone. Premium extends it to a full year, and Premium Plus keeps files forever, effectively acting as hosted storage for your converted audio. Downgrading later applies the shorter window to files going forward. You can also delete any file manually before its window ends, from the download page or your dashboard, if you would rather not wait for automatic deletion.
