Bandcamp vs SoundCloud: Upload Formats and What Fans Actually Hear
Bandcamp and SoundCloud sit side by side in every independent musician's release plan, but they treat your audio in almost opposite ways. Bandcamp demands a lossless file and then generates every format a fan could want; SoundCloud accepts nearly anything and streams a compressed rendition of whatever you gave it. Upload the wrong file to each and the result is invisible on one platform and audible on the other. Here is what each platform actually does to your upload, and what to give it so your mix survives.
Bandcamp: lossless in, everything out
Bandcamp's upload requirement is strict: lossless files only — WAV, AIFF, or FLAC, at 16-bit/44.1 kHz minimum (24-bit sources are accepted and welcome). You cannot upload an MP3 as your master. From that lossless source, Bandcamp transcodes on its servers into the full menu fans see at download time: FLAC, MP3 at 320 kbps and V0, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, and more.
This architecture has a quiet implication that works entirely in your favor: every derived format is a first-generation encode from your master. The 320 kbps MP3 a fan downloads was made directly from your WAV, not from another MP3 — the best-case version of lossy encoding. Streaming on the site runs at a lower bitrate (around 128 kbps MP3) to keep playback instant, which is why a track can sound slightly softer-edged in the browser player than in the purchased download. That is normal, and buyers get the good version.
What to do in practice: upload your actual master. If your masters live as WAV or AIFF bounces, upload those directly. If you archive in FLAC — which many artists do, since it halves storage with zero quality loss — upload the FLAC; the FLAC explainer covers why it is bit-identical to the WAV it came from.
SoundCloud: transcoded streams of whatever you give it
SoundCloud accepts a wide range of upload formats — lossless WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and lossy MP3, AAC, and others — with generous size limits. But what listeners hear is never your uploaded file: SoundCloud transcodes uploads for streaming, and free-tier listeners typically hear a compressed stream (historically 128 kbps MP3, now commonly 64 kbps Opus — which sounds better than its number suggests, but is still a firmly lossy rendition). Subscribers on higher tiers get higher-quality streams; downloads, where the artist enables them, deliver the original file.
The trap: if you upload a 128 kbps MP3, listeners hear a lossy transcode of a lossy file — two generations of compression stacked, which is where cymbals smear and reverb tails go grainy. The fix costs nothing: upload lossless to SoundCloud too, even though it does not require it. Your stream then carries only one generation of loss, the unavoidable one, and if you later enable downloads, fans get your master instead of your compromise.
What fans actually hear: the side-by-side
- Bandcamp stream: ~128 kbps MP3 from your lossless master — good, one clean generation.
- Bandcamp purchase: whatever format the fan picks, up to your original lossless master — the best your mix can sound anywhere.
- SoundCloud free stream: low-bitrate transcode of your upload — fine from a lossless source, audibly degraded from an MP3 source.
- SoundCloud download (if enabled): your original uploaded file, whatever it was.

When all you have is an MP3
Old projects, lost sessions, a producer who vanished with the stems — sometimes a 320 kbps MP3 is genuinely all that remains of a track. The honest playbook:
- SoundCloud: upload the MP3 as-is. One transcode generation on top of a 320 kbps source is acceptable; do not convert it to WAV first, which changes nothing but the file size.
- Bandcamp: the lossless requirement means you must convert the MP3 to WAV or FLAC to upload at all. This is a container change, not a quality upgrade — the file will sound exactly like the MP3 it came from. Some artists disclose this in the release notes; fans buying "lossless" deserve to know it is a lossless wrapper around a lossy source.
And for your own distribution outside the platforms — press kits, DJ pools, direct sends — encode fresh MP3s from the lossless master each time with a WAV to MP3 or FLAC to MP3 converter, or standardize a mixed folder with an 320 kbps converter. A note on loudness
Neither platform normalizes playback the way the big streaming services do, so what you master is close to what fans hear. That is an argument against slamming your master to win a loudness war that is not being fought here: a mix with dynamics intact sounds better through Bandcamp's transcodes and survives SoundCloud's Opus encode more gracefully than a brickwalled one, because heavy limiting plus lossy compression compound each other's artifacts. The release-day routine
- Keep one canonical lossless master per track (WAV, AIFF, or FLAC), backed up twice.
- Upload that master to both Bandcamp and SoundCloud — same file, both platforms.
- Let each platform make its own derivatives; generate your own MP3s from the master only for channels you control.
- Stream-check both platforms after processing finishes, on ordinary earbuds — that is the version most fans meet first.
Two platforms, opposite philosophies, one rule: the lossless master goes everywhere, and every compromise gets made from it, never from another compromise. Follow that and the version fans hear is always the best one the pipe allows.
